    PH banks’ assets rise

The Philippine banking sector’s assets reached P31.38 trillion by the end of August, according to data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). This represents an increase from P30.81 trillion the previous month and P27.73 trillion recorded in August last year, with growth observed in loans and investments.

    Nexa's Summary

The sustained growth in Philippine bank assets, driven primarily by an aggregate loan portfolio reaching P17.23 trillion and net investments rising to P9.04 trillion, suggests ongoing expansion within the financial sector. This expansion occurs despite a backdrop of elevated interest rates and broader economic uncertainties, indicating that certain segments of the economy continue to engage in credit-funded activities and investment holdings.

However, this asset growth does not necessarily signal broad-based economic strength. Chinabank economist Domini Velasquez observed that the banking system continues to expand its balance sheet even with a weaker economic backdrop, suggesting that overall credit growth is being driven by selected sectors rather than uniform strength in demand across the economy. This distinction is important for understanding which parts of the economy are leveraging financial services.

While the increase in assets points to resilience, Philippine Institute for Development Studies senior fellow John Paolo Rivera cautioned that slower economic growth and higher borrowing costs could temper future expansion. He emphasized the necessity for banks to ensure that asset growth is accompanied by sound loan quality, adequate capitalization, and prudent risk management. This focus on risk management becomes particularly relevant when growth is concentrated, as it could expose the system to vulnerabilities if those specific sectors face downturns.
