Perplexity launches its own take on AI agents for work
Perplexity has introduced "Teammates," a new suite of always-on AI agents designed for collaborative, large-scale work, directly challenging offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. The startup states these agents can perform multiple roles 24/7, integrating with existing Perplexity tools to access project memory and skills.
Perplexity's new "Teammates" are described as always-on AI agents capable of performing various tasks around the clock. These agents integrate with Perplexity Computer, an AI system that deploys agents to complete tasks on a device. Perplexity clarifies that Teammates expand on this by enabling collaboration and managing "ongoing, large-scale work," allowing users to assign them multiple jobs simultaneously and track their progress through the Perplexity app or Slack.
While the concept of always-on agents performing tasks is comparable to OpenAI’s Dots and Claude Duet, Perplexity focuses on its agents' capacity for sustained, complex projects. A key differentiator is the reported cost: Perplexity’s offering requires a $200 per month Max plan subscription, which the company notes is "much more expensive" than competing options. This pricing suggests a strategic positioning for users requiring deep, persistent AI integration into their workflows.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas envisions a future where organizations could employ "hundreds of teammates working for each person." This outlook suggests a potential shift in how enterprises might use AI, moving toward a model where AI agents act as deeply embedded, collaborative partners in daily operations rather than tools for isolated tasks. The reported capabilities focus on managing continuous, larger-scale work, indicating a potential target market for teams handling complex, long-duration projects.
