OpenAI, Anthropic And Google Discuss Joint AI Safety Standards
OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are discussing joint artificial intelligence safety standards. These talks began after Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis proposed a U.S.-led standards body in July. The discussions aim to address risks from increasingly capable AI systems. Companies face pressure to establish common safety practices. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slower pace of AI model improvements.
The push for joint AI safety standards reflects a deliberate action by major Western AI developers. This is not just about safety; it is about shaping future regulation. By proposing self-regulatory bodies with federal oversight, these companies aim to preempt more stringent, government-led mandates. Their goal is to control the narrative and the framework for AI development, ensuring their continued market dominance.
For Asia, this Western-led initiative presents a challenge. Asian AI companies and regulators must develop their own standards or risk being forced to adopt frameworks not designed for their markets. China, South Korea, and Singapore have active AI development. They should focus on interoperable standards that protect their own innovation while ensuring safety. The test for Asian regulators is to avoid simply importing Western norms.
The critical thing to watch is whether these voluntary industry standards gain traction by late 2027. If they do, they will set a de facto global benchmark. This would pressure Asian tech giants like Baidu and Tencent to conform or risk isolation. Conversely, a failure to agree on common standards would open the door for more diverse, regionally specific regulatory approaches.
