Not a token effort: beer meets artificial intelligence at bar in China’s capital

The AGI Bar in Beijing's Zhongguancun tech hub offers customers free access to AI models with any drink purchase. Opened in June last year, the bar provides free tokens for various AI models and runs DeepSeek-V4-Flash locally on two Nvidia DGX Spark computers. Customers connect via in-house Wi-fi and configure an AI agent to access these services. The bar, named after artificial general intelligence, sells its bestselling AGI beer for 9.9 yuan (US$1.47) and features merchandise from major Chinese AI companies like Alibaba and Tencent. Manager Yang Yuan declined to disclose monthly token consumption costs, stating they are covered by the bar's owner.

    Nexa's Summary

The AGI Bar in Beijing's Zhongguancun tech hub reflects a unique approach to AI adoption in China, blending a social setting with practical access to AI models. By offering free tokens for various AI models and running DeepSeek-V4-Flash locally on Nvidia DGX Spark computers, the bar creates a low-barrier entry point for individuals to experiment with AI. This model could accelerate grassroots AI literacy and innovation among a broader demographic in China, moving beyond traditional tech-centric environments. It also points to the increasing commodification of AI access, where the cost of compute and tokens is absorbed to attract users. Our view is that this initiative, while novel, highlights a potential challenge for AI developers: how to monetize AI access when free models and compute become readily available in unexpected places. For Chinese AI companies, such as those whose logos adorn the bar, it's a branding opportunity and a way to foster community engagement, but it also raises questions about the long-term economic models for AI services. The bar's ability to cover undisclosed token costs suggests a deeper financial backing, possibly from an entity with a strategic interest in promoting AI usage.
