North Korea Test-Fires New High-Speed Torpedo With AI Guidance
North Korea announced it test-fired a new high-speed precision-guided torpedo, the Jam-2.0, on October 15, claiming the weapon uses artificial intelligence for target detection and guidance. The Korean Central News Agency reported the test aimed to verify technical improvements to the system.
North Korea's claim of AI integration into the Jam-2.0 torpedo's target detection and guidance functions is presented as a key advancement. This emphasis on AI appears intended to highlight the weapon's accuracy, according to one analyst, suggesting a focus on enhancing the torpedo's capability to precisely strike targets.
The mention of a 'rocket propulsion unit' and the term 'high-speed' has led analysts to consider the possibility that the Jam-2.0 is a supercavitating torpedo. Such torpedoes are designed to travel faster than conventional models by reducing water resistance. However, combining this high speed with effective guidance and control for underwater targets has proven technically challenging for other nations developing similar systems.
This test is framed within North Korea's broader effort to strengthen its naval forces, which have generally been assessed as less capable than South Korea's. The development of new submarine-launched torpedoes, alongside a new submarine fleet, suggests an attempt to narrow this capability gap and advance its underwater strike capabilities.
