North Korea says tested AI-assisted torpedo system

North Korea has reportedly tested a new precision-guided torpedo system, the Zam-2.0, which incorporates artificial intelligence for target detection and guidance. State media announced the underwater test-fire took place on Thursday, following recent cruise missile tests and heightened border tensions with South Korea.

The reported application of AI in the Zam-2.0 torpedo system suggests a focus on enhancing targeting and evasion capabilities. Analysts indicate that AI could allow the torpedoes to distinguish real targets from decoys, a capability that might challenge existing countermeasures used by South Korea and the United States. This development follows previous announcements of AI-assisted hypersonic missile launches and leader Kim Jong Un's emphasis on integrating AI into weapons systems.

North Korea claims the Zam-2.0 system has undergone over 180 rounds of tests in the past five years, indicating a sustained development effort. The announcement also highlights improvements in propulsion efficiency and rocket propulsion device performance. These technical claims, if substantiated, point to an incremental but persistent push to advance military hardware.

The tests occur within an apparent arms race between North and South Korea, particularly concerning hypersonic missiles. Both nations have recently reported testing their own hypersonic weapons. Analysts propose that North Korea's rapid advancements in weapons technology might be supported by external sources, potentially Russia, in exchange for military assistance.
