Moving beyond chips and screens: Samsung joins Nvidia and KKR in a massive $1 billion data center infrastructure deal
Samsung and five of its affiliates have committed $1 billion to KKR's Helix data center infrastructure project, joining Nvidia in the investment. This initiative aims to integrate various components necessary for AI infrastructure, including chips, cooling systems, construction, computing resources, and batteries, according to TechRadar Sg.
Samsung's investment in the Helix project signifies a strategic move to secure comprehensive AI infrastructure, extending beyond its traditional role as a chip manufacturer. By co-investing in a project that bundles chips, cooling, construction, computing, and batteries, Samsung is participating in the foundational elements required for large-scale AI operations.
This collaboration with KKR and Nvidia suggests an industry recognition that AI's growth demands integrated solutions rather than just isolated hardware components. Building and operating AI data centers involves coordinating diverse technologies and significant capital, indicating a move towards more complete, engineered environments for AI workloads.
For Samsung, this could help ensure access to the necessary infrastructure for its own AI development efforts and potentially open new revenue streams by offering broader infrastructure services. The $1 billion commitment reflects the perceived importance of influencing or controlling the full stack of resources that underpin advanced AI capabilities.
