MAS’ Future of Finance Institute Begins Operations with AI Focus
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has launched its Future of Finance Institute (FFI), with an initial focus on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into financial services. The institute will operate three programs, PathFin.ai, BuildFin.ai, and SafeFin.ai, to address knowledge sharing, AI deployment standards, and risk management, particularly for autonomous AI systems.
The FFI's launch outlines a structured approach to AI adoption within Singapore's financial sector. Its programs aim to bridge the gap between emerging AI capabilities and practical, safe application. PathFin.ai will establish a Knowledge Hub and Communities of Practice to foster experience sharing among professionals in banking, insurance, capital markets, financial advisory, and payments, helping institutions identify suitable AI solutions.
A core aspect of FFI's mandate is addressing the complexities of 'agentic AI,' which refers to AI systems capable of autonomous operation. The BuildFin.ai program will collaborate with financial institutions, technology companies, and researchers to develop guidance, industry standards, and shared tools for deploying these AI agents. This includes building on MAS's existing Safeguards for Agentic Finance at Runtime (SAFR) framework to create practical safeguards for safe usage.
Complementing deployment efforts, SafeFin.ai will focus on strengthening AI risk management. It will bring financial institutions together to develop practical resources for implementing MAS’ Guidelines on AI Risk Management and enhance the MindForge AI Risk Management Toolkit. This enhancement is designed to improve AI use case risk assessments, testing and assurance, and the management of risks involving third-party AI.
The institute, led by interim CEO Alan Lim, aims to serve as a public-private platform. MAS Managing Director Chia Der Jiun stated that it will pool expertise from financial institutions, technology firms, and the research community to anchor key capabilities in Singapore, accelerate innovation, and support the safe adoption of new technologies. While initially focused on AI, FFI plans to expand into other areas of financial innovation, such as tokenisation.
