Macronix mulls capacity expansion
Macronix International Co, a major supplier of NOR and NAND flash memory chips, is cautiously evaluating capacity expansion amid robust demand from AI servers and applications. Chairman Miin Wu stated the company has no intention to build new plants, instead prioritizing full factory utilization and investing in new product developments.
Macronix International Co is pursuing a distinct strategy for navigating the memory chip industry's prolonged upcycle, which is significantly driven by demand for artificial intelligence (AI) servers. Unlike other major chip suppliers announcing new capacity expansion plans, Macronix chairman Miin Wu indicates the company will not build new plants. Instead, Macronix prioritizes maximizing its existing factory utilization to full capacity, aiming for revenue growth primarily through price increases rather than broad manufacturing expansion.
This approach reflects a cautious stance, particularly given mounting concerns over a potential AI bubble. Macronix intends to hedge against these risks by focusing on new product developments, with several planned for release next year. This strategy is exemplified by a reported deal to supply NOR and eMMC NAND flash memory to SpaceX for its low Earth orbit satellite constellations, a specialized contract expected to boost annual shipments by over one million units.
NOR flash memory, known for its fast read speeds, is typically used for code storage, while eMMC NAND flash offers high-density storage for embedded systems. Although Macronix expects to add 5,000 12-inch wafers per month through a NT$15.8 billion investment, this capacity addition is not anticipated until 2028 due to equipment lead times. This timeline suggests a strategic delay in physical expansion, reinforcing the company's reliance on existing assets and product innovation in the near term.
