Hong Kong’s Exchange Fund earnings tumble 74% as HKMA warns of more market turbulence

Hong Kong’s Exchange Fund, which serves to defend the local currency, reported a 74 per cent decline in third-quarter earnings, totaling HK$18.6 billion (US$2.4 billion). The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) attributed the drop to pervasive market uncertainty, with earnings for the first nine months of 2026 sliding 39.6 per cent from a year earlier.

The substantial fall in the Exchange Fund’s earnings reflects a challenging market environment for Hong Kong. The fund, which acts as a reserve to maintain the stability of the Hong Kong dollar, saw its Hong Kong equities portfolio record a HK$2.7 billion loss in the first nine months of 2026. This specific segment's performance significantly contributed to the overall earnings reduction.

This decline in the equities portfolio occurred as the broader Hang Seng Index fell more than 9 per cent over the first 10 months of 2026. The market downturn was primarily driven by concerns related to interest rates and corporate earnings. HKMA chief Eddie Yue also indicated that sharp market swings and geopolitical risks are expected to pose further challenges in the final quarter.

For businesses and investors in Asia, particularly those eyeing Hong Kong as a financial hub, these reported earnings figures from the Exchange Fund serve as an indicator of prevailing market conditions. While the report highlights specific factors impacting the equities segment, it does not detail the performance of other components within the Exchange Fund that also contribute to its overall returns.
