Korean Institute Rolls Out AI Systems for Parking and Bridge Safety
Korea's state construction research institute has launched two AI systems: one that reduced illegal parking by 99% during peak hours in a pilot area and another for real-time bridge safety assessments. The systems, developed by the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, aim to lower local government costs and improve public safety through AI applications.
The institute's MOVI system addresses illegal parking through real-time detection and driver guidance, rather than just fines. By using edge AI video analysis, it identifies violations and directs drivers to available public parking via variable message signs and ground lights. This approach seeks to encourage voluntary compliance, which the institute claims has significantly reduced incidents in a pilot zone.
The 99% reduction in illegal parking, observed in Byeollae-dong, Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, applies to incidents lasting five minutes or longer during peak hours. This specific metric indicates the system's effectiveness in a controlled environment, suggesting a capacity to influence driver behavior when immediate feedback and alternatives are provided. The integration with a control platform also allows for data analysis to inform broader traffic management strategies.
Separately, the institute developed an AI system for bridge safety that provides assessments in about 10 minutes, with over 90% accuracy compared to existing commercial programs. This system, relying on Data-Simulation Fusion technology and sensors, offers a faster and potentially more cost-effective alternative to traditional methods, which can incur substantial annual maintenance fees and require days for expert review. Its compatibility with existing facility management systems could ease adoption.
