Japan’s Sumitomo Bakelite expands China chip packaging materials output amid AI boom
Sumitomo Bakelite plans to expand production of mould underfill (MUF) materials and compression-moulding granules at its facilities in Suzhou, China, and Singapore. The company stated this move is expected to roughly double its MUF material capacity and triple its compression-moulding granule capacity compared to current levels.
The expansion by Sumitomo Bakelite focuses on specific materials for advanced chip packaging, a segment of the semiconductor supply chain that has grown in importance. The company's decision to add production lines for MUF materials and compression-moulding granules directly addresses the requirements of more sophisticated semiconductors, which are increasingly vital for artificial intelligence applications.
The planned capacity increases are substantial, with MUF material production expected to roughly double and compression-moulding granules to triple. These targets indicate a clear anticipation of sustained demand for these particular components, suggesting that the company is preparing for continued growth in the advanced semiconductor sector.
New production lines in Suzhou are scheduled to begin operations in fiscal 2030, while those in Singapore are expected to start at the end of fiscal 2028. This staggered timeline for bringing new capacity online suggests a measured approach to expansion, potentially aligning with projected market growth and allowing for sequential implementation of the new facilities.
