‘Jensen’s nightmare’: Huawei, DeepSeek narrow AI chip ecosystem gap with Nvidia: report

Chinese tech champion Huawei Technologies is narrowing the AI chip ecosystem gap with Nvidia, according to a new report from SemiAnalysis. The research firm indicates that AI model startup DeepSeek is deepening its integration with Huawei’s Ascend 950PR chips and is projected to rely primarily on Huawei's technology stack by 2027 or 2028.

The SemiAnalysis report highlights a growing "symbiosis" between DeepSeek and Huawei, specifically centered on the latter's Ascend 950PR chips. These are Huawei's high-performance processors designed for artificial intelligence tasks. DeepSeek's increased experimentation with these chips, alongside its latest software releases developed "on top of" this hardware, points to a strategic integration.

This coordinated development approach, where AI models and software are optimized for specific hardware within a comprehensive technology stack, is crucial for building a robust AI ecosystem. SemiAnalysis suggests this mirrors the strategy that has historically given Nvidia a competitive edge, indicating a deliberate effort to establish an alternative platform.

The projection that DeepSeek will likely rely "primarily" on Huawei’s "already mature and well developed" technology stack by 2027 or 2028 further underscores the potential for a dedicated, integrated ecosystem. While this is a future forecast rather than a current state, it points to a significant long-term commitment that could shift market dynamics.

Such deepening integration aims to accelerate domestic innovation by leveraging the respective strengths of both companies. This strategic alignment between an AI model developer and a chip hardware provider is a fundamental step in fostering a self-sufficient and competitive AI chip environment.
