Innovation Wing provides equipment, workspace, guidance for hands-on projects

The University of Hong Kong’s Innovation Wing provides students with equipment, workspace, and academic guidance to develop hands-on projects and prototypes, including AI-driven solutions. Kevin Tien-Hsuan Wu, a lecturer at HKU’s Innovation Academy, stated the facility supports experiential learning and allows students to test ideas before considering commercialization, rather than serving as a primary startup incubator.

The University of Hong Kong's (HKU) Innovation Wing serves as a hub for students to apply classroom knowledge to practical projects, offering resources like 3D printers, equipment, and academic advice. According to Kevin Tien-Hsuan Wu, a lecturer at HKU’s Innovation Academy, the facility emphasizes "experiential learning activities" where students build prototypes for diverse applications, from robots designed for electrical infrastructure insulation to interactive AI guides for museum visitors.

A core function of the Innovation Wing is to facilitate early-stage ideation and development. Students can initiate their own projects or collaborate on problems presented by companies or public institutions. The facility supports the use of AI, providing access to AI models through university services, which removes subscription costs for participants and encourages engagement with advanced technologies.

Crucially, the Innovation Wing is not primarily focused on immediate commercial outcomes or acting as a startup incubator. Its stated aim, as explained by Wu, is to offer students a space to "test ideas before deciding whether to pursue them further." Projects can extend across multiple semesters, allowing for sustained development and knowledge transfer among student cohorts, prioritizing learning and experimentation over direct market entry.
