Chery’s joint venture K-car exposed in patent images with “offroad” trim, rivals BYD’s Racco

Chery's joint venture, EMT, is preparing to launch its Emta EV K-car in Japan in 2027, with recent patent filings revealing the microcar's exterior. The images detail extensive production tweaks from its initial concept, including a "softroader" variant, as the Singapore-based brand aims to compete with existing EV Kei offerings.

The Emta EV K-car, a compact electric vehicle designed for Japan's specific Kei car regulations, is moving closer to production. Kei cars are a category of small, light vehicles subject to size and engine displacement limits, offering tax and insurance advantages primarily in the Japanese market. Emta, a Singapore-based joint venture, involves Chery Automobile, Jiangsu Yueda Automobile Group, Autobacs Seven, Gotion, and Anest Iwata, each reportedly contributing distinct expertise to the vehicle's development and market entry.

The operational strategy for Emta's debut vehicle appears to be a multi-national collaboration, with Chery reported to act as the technology provider, offering vehicle platforms, EV powertrains, and assisted driving tech. Manufacturing is slated for Jiangsu Yueda Automobile Group's Yancheng plant in China. Volkswagen-backed Gotion will supply the batteries, while Autobacs, identified as Japan’s largest retailer of automotive parts and accessories, is reported to handle sales channels in its home country. Anest Iwata Corp. will provide quality support.

Patent images reveal a shift from the concept car's sportier stance to a more practical design, with wheels tucked in and bodywork stretched to K-car legal limits. Notable changes include traditional sliding rear doors and a significant front-end makeover. A new "softroader" trim features extensive plastic cladding and an alternate front bumper, likely to evoke an off-road aesthetic. While these enhancements are expected to be primarily cosmetic, the company plans for a 2027 launch in Japan, with future local manufacturing considered after 2030, pending commercial success.
