Huawei unveils new optical tech standard in challenge to Nvidia, Broadcom

Huawei’s NPO proposal is a direct play for control in a critical AI chip component. The company aims to simplify manufacturing and use existing supply chains, a clear advantage over CPO. NPO also offers easier repairability, a key operational benefit for large-scale AI infrastructure deployments. Huawei’s 7.2 terabits per second NPO solution is the first in the industry at that speed.

The NPO proposal creates a new competitive dynamic for Asian chipmakers and cloud providers. Chinese players like Innolight and Eoptolink could see increased demand if NPO gains traction. The OIF’s review of the NPO standard will determine its global viability. A new standard could also reduce reliance on US-backed CPO solutions for some regional players.

The test for Huawei is securing broad industry support beyond China. The established CPO standard already has global industry backing.
