How Did GCash Scale Its Lending Business to 11 Million Borrowers?
GCash, the Philippines' leading finance superapp, has expanded its lending business through Fuse Financing Inc. to serve over 11 million borrowers, leveraging Mambu's cloud-native lending core. This technological shift enabled GCash to rapidly configure and launch diverse credit products, including nano-loans, significantly reducing development time from months to weeks, according to Fuse CTO Maribeth Tiu.
Digital lenders across Asia Pacific often contend with large unbanked populations and customer expectations for integrated credit access within superapps. GCash faced similar pressures; its previous legacy platform required extensive customisation and months for new product development. The strategic move to Mambu's cloud-native platform in 2017 was aimed at introducing greater flexibility to address these constraints.
The adoption of a configurable lending core, combined with open APIs, allowed GCash's Fuse Financing team to build and adapt diverse lending propositions rapidly. This reduced development cycles from months to weeks, enabling the creation of tailored products like GLoan Sakto, a nano-loan designed for very small, specific needs such as 100-300 Philippine Pesos for transport. This approach prioritised addressing distinct financial gaps experienced by customers within the GCash app.
This architectural choice facilitated GCash's ability to manage multiple products and integrations while aiming to protect customer trust and safety. Mambu is also developing an "agentic AI layer" designed to move beyond simple data retrieval, enabling deeper analysis and decision-making within banking operations. For lenders, this could translate into opportunities to integrate intelligence closer to core financial decisions, retaining flexibility as customer needs evolve.
While GCash activity contributes to its internal GScore for credit eligibility, Fuse CTO Maribeth Tiu stated that the objective is not simply to lend more money, but to match products responsibly to what customers need and can manage. This disciplined approach to growth, alongside Mynt's (GCash's parent company) recent IPO approval, positions the company to continue refining its lending decisions rather than solely focusing on volume.
