Hong Kong to deepen ties with Global South and Middle East, finance chief says
Hong Kong plans to strengthen its economic connections with emerging economies in the Middle East and countries involved in China's Belt and Road Initiative. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po stated the city will build "networked and institutionalised" links with the Global South, encompassing developing nations primarily in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These efforts will span various sectors, from finance to innovation and technology. Chan highlighted the country's 15th five-year plan, which supports Hong Kong's development as an international innovation and technology center and a global hub for finance, shipping, and trade. The initiative also includes cooperation on green transition, focusing on aligning standards and rules to facilitate green finance investments in the Global South.
Hong Kong's push to deepen ties with the Global South and Belt and Road countries, as outlined by Financial Secretary Paul Chan, reflects a strategic alignment with China's 15th five-year plan. This initiative aims to bolster Hong Kong's position as an international innovation and technology center, expanding its reach beyond traditional Western markets. The focus on green finance and aligning standards for climate transition in the Global South presents a tangible opportunity for Hong Kong's financial sector, given the substantial financing gap in these regions. This move could position Hong Kong as a key facilitator for green capital deployment. The challenge lies in building robust, institutionalized connectivity with diverse economies, each with unique regulatory and market landscapes. While the intent is clear, the execution will require significant diplomatic and economic effort to establish credible standards that attract confident investment. For Asian tech and startup professionals, this could open new markets and collaboration opportunities, particularly in green technology and digital infrastructure, but the practical pathways for engagement are still developing.
