Hong Kong emerges as Asia’s top hub for start-up potential, ranks fifth worldwide: study
Hong Kong has been identified as Asia's leading hub for high-growth startup potential, ranking fifth globally, according to a joint study by CB Insights and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP). The report, released on Monday, highlights the city's increasing capability in fostering scalable ventures and future unicorns. Unlike Silicon Valley's single-hub model, Asia operates as a distributed network where different markets specialize in various stages of the technology life cycle. Foreign investors are significantly involved, participating in 81 percent of Hong Kong's equity deals and channeling 84 percent of their regional capital through the city, with 55 percent of unique equity investors originating from outside Asia.
Hong Kong's top ranking in Asia for startup potential, and fifth globally, reflects its role as a critical gateway for Asian companies targeting international markets. The CB Insights study points out that 81 percent of Hong Kong's equity deals involve foreign investors, with 84 percent of regional capital flowing through the city. This suggests a strong international confidence in Hong Kong's ability to nurture scalable ventures. The city's unique position, where 55 percent of its unique equity investors come from outside Asia, underscores its appeal as a global entry point rather than just a regional exit. The report emphasizes that Hong Kong companies show the strongest growth momentum among Asian markets, a key factor for private company success across momentum, financing, market opportunity, and leadership. This structure contrasts with Silicon Valley's concentrated model, positioning Hong Kong as a specialized node in Asia's distributed tech ecosystem.
