Geely develops 1000V architecture to go beyond 5.5-minute 10-80% charging
Geely Holding Group is developing a 1000V high-voltage architecture for its electric vehicles, aiming to achieve charging times faster than 5.5 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge. This initiative seeks to surpass current flash charging technologies, including those offered by rivals like BYD. The company is already integrating 800V systems into its vehicles, which include 800V components across batteries, e-motors, and power controllers. Geely’s Lynk & Co 10 sedan, despite being marketed with 900V architecture claims, operates on a 772.8V battery, qualifying it as an 800V system. The automaker has also built over 2,100 Zeekr-branded 1,500 kW single-gun chargers, preparing infrastructure for future high-voltage vehicles.
Geely’s push into 1000V charging architecture is a direct challenge to BYD and other EV makers in China, aiming to significantly reduce charging times. While Geely’s current 800V systems are already competitive, the development of a 1000V system, capable of utilizing 1,500 kW charging stations, could bring EV charging closer to gasoline refueling speeds. This move is critical for consumer adoption in China, where range anxiety and charging convenience remain key factors. The company has already invested in substantial charging infrastructure, with over 2,100 Zeekr-branded 1,500 kW chargers ready for future vehicles. The real story is not just the voltage increase, but Geely’s strategic investment in a comprehensive charging ecosystem. While the Lynk & Co 10 sedan’s 900V claim was clarified as an 800V system, the ongoing development of a true 1000V architecture points to Geely’s long-term vision for EV dominance. The ability to charge from 10% to 80% in under 5.5 minutes would be a major differentiator in the competitive Chinese EV market, potentially shifting consumer preferences towards Geely brands.
