Canva releases its first image generation model
Design platform Canva has released Canva Craft, its first proprietary image generation model, developed to compete with offerings from major AI developers. The company states its model was trained on human-designed templates from Canva’s library rather than photographs, aiming for outputs with accurate details and legible text, available to all users.
Canva's introduction of its own image generation model, Canva Craft, marks a strategic move to internalize a core AI capability. The company noted that it trained this model using human-designed templates from its extensive library, including posters, social posts, and typography-rich layouts, rather than relying on photographic datasets. This approach suggests an intent to generate images specifically tailored for graphic design applications, where elements like accurate object details and legible text are paramount, addressing common challenges faced by general-purpose image generators.
A key implication of this design-centric training is Canva Craft's reported synergy with Canva Magic, the platform's image-to-design transformer. The company claims that images generated by Craft could be converted into layered designs, allowing users to integrate AI-generated content directly into their projects with maintained editability. This deep integration within Canva's ecosystem indicates a focus on enhancing workflow efficiency for designers, providing them with AI-generated assets that are immediately actionable within their existing tools.
Beyond creative control, Canva stated that developing its own model could also yield operational benefits. The company previously used various third-party image models, and the new proprietary model is expected to help save API costs. Furthermore, Canva anticipates gaining better quality and speed control over its image generation capabilities. This strategic shift, supported by contributions from researchers at the acquired Leonardo.ai, positions Canva to exert greater influence over the functionality and economics of AI-driven design on its platform.
