FLock.io Says Qwen-Based Decision Model Outperforms Larger LLMs on Selected Tasks
FLock.io announced on October 13 the launch of THIS / THAT Model, a small, open-source AI model designed for rapid, low-cost decision-making. Built on Qwen3.5-2B with support from Qwen and Alibaba Cloud, the model reportedly processed 2.5 million decisions in three weeks and achieved an 87.8% success rate in complex decision tasks.
The introduction of FLock.io's THIS / THAT Model illustrates a shift towards specialized AI models for enterprise applications. Instead of generating open-ended text, this model focuses on tasks with predefined answers, such as classification or yes/no decisions. This approach aims to reduce the computational overhead and cost often associated with larger, general-purpose language models, particularly where speed and efficiency are critical.
The model's design emphasizes local deployment, with 1.88 billion parameters allowing it to run on standard developer hardware and edge devices. This capability supports on-device data processing, which can address data privacy concerns and reduce latency. The reported local inference latency of approximately 31.4 milliseconds contrasts with the seconds often required by standard cloud-based LLMs.
FLock.io's development process, leveraging synthetic training data generated with Qwen Max on Alibaba Cloud, highlights a strategy for model optimization without increasing size. This method, drawing on research like GraphSynth and CircuitSynth, suggests that performance improvements for specific tasks can come from refining training data rather than scaling up model parameters. The collaboration with Qwen and Alibaba Cloud demonstrates how specialized firms can integrate with major cloud providers to develop targeted AI solutions.
