First update made to ISO 9001 in a decade, with China shaping AI, cybersecurity standards

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) released ISO 9001:2026, its first major revision to quality management standards in a decade. China played a significant role in shaping new international standards for AI, intelligent transport systems, and cybersecurity. ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica noted China leads around 100 ISO technical committees. Beijing has been responsible for developing or revising approximately 600 ISO standards.

China's influence on global tech standards is now undeniable. Beijing has developed or revised 600 ISO standards and chairs 100 technical committees. This development extends beyond quality management. It reflects a deliberate strategy to embed Chinese technical specifications into international frameworks, particularly in AI and cybersecurity.

This shift means Asian tech companies, especially those in emerging markets, will increasingly build products to Chinese-influenced standards. This could accelerate market entry for Chinese firms across Southeast Asia. It also presents a challenge for regulators in countries like Singapore and South Korea, who must balance Western and Chinese technical norms.

The thing to watch is how quickly these new ISO 9001:2026 standards are adopted across major Asian economies. Rapid adoption would solidify China's position as a primary shaper of future tech development. Slow adoption, however, would signal continued fragmentation in regional tech governance.
