Even Older GPUs Cost More as Korea Faces AI Compute Crunch
Vessl AI increased its hourly rate for Nvidia H100 GPUs by 24.7% this month. This follows similar price hikes by US neocloud providers. The move reflects tightening supply for both new and older high-performance GPUs. Other Korean cloud providers also expect rate adjustments, raising concerns for local AI companies and government AX projects.
The surge in H100 GPU prices in Korea reflects more than new chip scarcity. Prices for four-year-old H100s are reversing course, climbing 21.9% over the past month to $3.28 per hour on platforms like Ornn. This shows demand is spilling over to previous-generation chips as new supply cannot keep pace. Vessl AI, with clients like Upstage, now charges $2.98 an hour for H100s, up from $2.39.
Korean AI companies and research institutions face direct consequences. Some firms have withdrawn from government AX project bids due to a lack of GPU access. Universities are scaling back research or seeking new funding. The ability to secure computing resources, not just AI technology, now determines success for Korean players.
The thing to watch is how Korean neoclouds like Vessl AI manage their expansion plans. Vessl AI aims for 10,000 GPUs by year-end. If procurement costs continue to rise, their flexible rate adjustments will shift more burden to local AI developers. This will test the competitiveness of Korea’s domestic AI ecosystem against better-resourced global players.
