DoIT Unveils 3.2T Silicon Photonics Optical Engine at TIE
Taiwan's Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) unveiled a 3.2T silicon photonics optical engine at the Taiwan Innotech Expo (TIE) 2026. This technology aims to address the escalating demand for high-speed data transmission in AI computing. More than 20 partners collaborated on this development. The TIE 2026 event opened on September 17 at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1.
The 3.2T silicon photonics optical engine from DoIT is a tangible step in Taiwan's push for AI infrastructure. This is not merely an incremental speed bump. It reflects a clear strategy to integrate advanced photonics with existing silicon capabilities. The goal is to capture a larger share of the AI computing market, moving beyond just chip manufacturing.
Taiwanese firms gain a competitive edge in high-bandwidth interconnects. This directly benefits data center operators and AI hardware developers across Asia. The 20-plus partners involved suggest a robust domestic supply chain is forming. This could reduce reliance on foreign optical component suppliers in the long term, strengthening Taiwan's tech sovereignty.
The thing to watch is the commercialization timeline. DoIT's announcement at TIE 2026 is a showcase. The test will be volume production and adoption by major AI cloud providers by 2027. If these engines appear in next-generation AI accelerators, Taiwan's position in the AI supply chain will solidify further.
