    Digital bank accelerates customer acquisition

GoTyme Bank aims to reach 12.5 million customers by year-end, up from 11.3 million as of September 26. The digital bank reported P63 billion in customer deposits by that date and noted that Apple Pay and Google Pay launches contributed to accelerated customer acquisition, particularly among younger Filipinos.

GoTyme Bank's growth trajectory suggests a focus on expanding its user base, with a stated goal of 1.2 million new customers by year-end. The bank attributes a majority of its customer acquisition to organic growth, indicating that its brand recognition is increasing within the market. The reported 450,000 new customers monthly as of September 26, alongside the 11.3 million total, suggests a consistent, if not accelerating, uptake.

The integration of Apple Pay and Google Pay appears to be a factor in drawing in younger demographics, although customer sign-ups were already increasing before these services launched. This suggests that while payment platform compatibility is beneficial, other factors, potentially related to the bank's broader strategy or market conditions, were also driving adoption. The emphasis on payment penetration indicates a foundational step in broader financial inclusion.

Despite progress in account and payment penetration, GoTyme acknowledges a significant gap in higher-value financial services, with less than 16 percent of Filipinos having access to formal credit. The bank's plan to expand access to its MoreTyme credit line, aiming for all customers to be eligible by Q1 2027, illustrates an effort to address this gap and deepen its engagement with the existing customer base. This move from 10% to 20% of customers having access by year-end, then full access, represents a phased approach to credit expansion.
