Digi Yatra set to include international travel, domestic air travel for foreigners
India’s Digi Yatra facial recognition system will expand to international departures and domestic travel for foreigners. A pilot program will run from October to December at five major Indian airports: Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Mumbai. This trial will test e-passport based enrollment and link digital credentials to boarding passes. Air India and IndiGo will participate in the initial phase. Digi Yatra also seeks interoperability with the EU Digital Identity framework within six months.
Digi Yatra’s expansion beyond domestic use cases marks a critical step for India’s digital identity infrastructure. The shift to e-passport based enrollment for international flights, bypassing immigration in the first phase, shows a pragmatic approach. This focuses on airport entry and security. The system is already active at 39 domestic airports and plans to reach 64 by March 2027.
The interoperability push with the EU Digital Identity framework could position India as a leader in cross-border digital travel. This benefits Indian travelers to Europe. It also creates a blueprint for other Asian nations eyeing similar seamless travel solutions. Air India and IndiGo’s participation in the trial provides crucial airline buy-in, which is essential for wider adoption.

A smooth rollout for international departures could accelerate similar biometric adoption across Asia. This would set a new standard for efficient air travel.
