China’s Xiaomi unveils folding phone with home-grown chip as it takes on Apple, Huawei
Xiaomi has launched its new 18 Fold foldable phone, featuring proprietary Xring O3 AI chips. This release coincides with Huawei's latest foldable launch and precedes an expected entry from Apple into the foldable market. The 18 Fold is priced from 10,999 yuan (US$1,639) and will begin sales on Thursday. Xiaomi also unveiled new models of its Skynomad SUV, signaling a broader push to compete with rivals like Tesla and Apple.
Xiaomi's introduction of the 18 Fold, powered by its in-house Xring O3 AI processor, marks a significant step in China's domestic chip development. The Xring O3 boasts 24 billion transistors and a 60 percent CPU performance increase over its predecessor, the O1. This advancement suggests a continued effort by Chinese tech giants to reduce reliance on foreign semiconductor technology, especially in high-growth segments like foldable smartphones. The timing of this launch, alongside Huawei's new foldable and Apple's anticipated entry, intensifies competition in the premium smartphone market across Asia. While the 18 Fold's durability features and performance gains are notable, the key watch point for the Asian market is how Xiaomi's proprietary chip strategy will scale against established players. The company's ability to integrate advanced AI processing into its devices, coupled with a competitive price point starting at 10,999 yuan, could influence consumer adoption in China and other regional markets. However, sustained success will depend on long-term chip development roadmaps and market acceptance in a crowded field.
