China’s EDA champion buys start-up to address weak link, support Huawei’s Tau Scaling Law
Empyrean Technology, China's leading provider of electronic design automation (EDA) tools, plans to acquire a 50.38 percent stake in Easy-Logic Technology for 218.8 million yuan (US$33 million). The Beijing-based firm announced in a Shenzhen Stock Exchange filing that this move supports efforts to reduce reliance on Western chip-design software.
Electronic design automation (EDA) tools are specialized software used by engineers to design and verify integrated circuits. Easy-Logic Technology, founded in 2021, develops logic optimisation tools, which help chip designers refine digital logic gates to reduce iteration time and resource requirements during the development process. Empyrean's acquisition of this Shenzhen-based startup indicates a focused effort to integrate specific, advanced capabilities into its offerings.
By incorporating Easy-Logic's tools, Empyrean aims to bolster its domestic capabilities in a critical phase of chip design. Empyrean states that Easy-Logic's algorithms have won international EDA competitions and its products are used by nearly 100 digital chip design firms globally. This acquisition represents a targeted step to indigenise a particular, technically advanced component of chip design software, thereby reducing dependence on external providers for that specific functionality.
While the purchase addresses a specific functional gap, the overall impact on China's broader reliance on Western EDA tools cannot be fully assessed from this single transaction alone. The reported achievements and widespread use of Easy-Logic's algorithms are attributed to Empyrean's statements, and independent verification of these claims is not provided in the reporting.
