Brian Chesky interview: AI agents need their own operating system
Airbnb has launched an AI-powered search feature, marking a deliberate move into AI after co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky previously expressed reservations about chatbot-only interfaces for travel discovery. Chesky indicated that the current search is an interim step, with future interfaces evolving to support collaborative planning and integrate with emerging consumer AI agents.
Brian Chesky maintains that chatbots are unsuitable for e-commerce, particularly for browsing and shopping, because they limit options and require multiple interactions to yield results. He noted that the new Airbnb search, while an advancement, is not the ultimate solution for online travel. The company aims for an interface that balances the directness of a chatbot with the rich, inspirational browsing experience that users enjoy during travel planning.
A key challenge Chesky identified with current chatbots is their single-user design, which conflicts with how groups often plan trips collaboratively. Airbnb plans to explore "multiplayer" AI interfaces over the next three to six months to enable several people to use the AI simultaneously for joint trip planning. This suggests a shift towards AI tools that facilitate shared decision-making rather than individual task execution.
Chesky also discussed the rise of consumer AI agents, which act on behalf of users. He believes these agents will require robust software infrastructure from companies like Airbnb, which aims to make its platform more "agent-friendly." While acknowledging the potential for agents to generate leads, Chesky emphasized the need for adaptive interfaces that retain distinct designs for different utilities, rather than a universal, simplified UI.
