Apple iPhone Duo price premiums evaporate in China’s scalper market
Apple's newly released iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, has seen significant price reductions in mainland China's scalper market just days after launch. Resellers were reportedly forced to drop premiums by hundreds of dollars due to mixed early consumer reviews citing durability and software glitches, which pared demand.
The secondary market for Apple's iPhone Duo in mainland China experienced rapid price adjustments following its recent release. Vendors, such as one in Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei electronics market, reduced the premium on popular models like the 1-terabyte black iPhone Duo by as much as 2,800 yuan (US$420). This brought the asking price down from over 25,000 yuan to 24,300 yuan.
This swift decline in premium pricing is attributed to early consumer feedback and social media discussion. Reports indicate that mixed reviews regarding the device's durability and software compatibility issues dampened initial demand for Apple's first foldable smartphone, leading resellers to cut prices to attract buyers.
Despite the initial drop, a slight rebound in buyer interest was observed once prices became more accessible. This suggests that while concerns about the device's early performance impacted demand at higher premium levels, a lowered price point could still stimulate purchasing activity within the unofficial resale channels.
