Anthropic co-founder says AI could boost US GDP 50%
Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark stated that the company's internal models suggest AI could increase US economic output by almost 50% by 2030 under specific conditions. Speaking at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Clark emphasized the need for international cooperation to establish "unusual and serious rules" for the transformative technology.
Clark's projection of a nearly 50% increase in US GDP by 2030, potentially reaching $44 trillion from a current level of just over $30 trillion, is an internal forecast from Anthropic. He acknowledged this figure "sounds very outlandish" and specified it assumes continued technological improvement and the creation of new industries to power such an expansion.
The discussion highlighted AI's potential as a "force multiplier" for scientific discovery, capable of solving complex problems in mathematics, engineering, and biology, including new drug discovery. However, Clark also cautioned about associated perils, such as the misuse of science for biological and cyber weapons, and the growing evidence of a "singularity" where AI development outpaces human control.
Clark stressed the urgency for policymakers to act within a shrinking window to impose safeguards, noting that while AI is currently under human control, this window is "a small number of years." He also addressed AI's impact on employment, acknowledging job losses in fields like call centers but pointing to its role in enhancing scientific research and its potential to create jobs in entirely new industries. He suggested more countries could participate in the AI revolution by building data center computing capacity.
