AMD's Lisa Su Returns to Korea for Gamer Day Event
AMD CEO Lisa Su is scheduled to visit Seoul for a "Gamer Day" event on October 7, her first trip to Korea in seven months. Industry sources reported on October 6 that Su is also expected to engage with Korean AI chip startups, with potential meetings with Samsung and SK hynix executives under discussion.
Lisa Su's visit extends beyond the public "Gamer Day" event, with an agenda that appears to prioritize strengthening AMD's position within Korea's AI chip sector. The Ministry of Science and ICT is reportedly coordinating meetings on October 8 between AMD and several Korean AI accelerator startups, including FuriosaAI, Rebellions, DeepX, Mobilint, and MangoBoost. This suggests a concerted effort to foster collaboration and potentially integrate these firms into AMD's broader GPU ecosystem.
The discussions with Korean AI chip companies are aimed at expanding technology cooperation, which could involve joint development or support for AMD's platforms. While the specific nature of these collaborations remains unconfirmed and plans are still in early discussion, the involvement of a government ministry indicates a strategic interest in developing the domestic AI chip industry through international partnerships.
Attention is also on potential high-level meetings with Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. Given Samsung's role as a supplier of HBM4 memory for AMD's next-generation GPUs, any additional meeting could signal an intent to broaden this partnership beyond memory components, possibly into areas like mobile devices and AI PCs. Similarly, meetings with SK hynix and LG Electronics, both of whom have recently expanded AI cooperation with Nvidia, could indicate AMD's efforts to diversify its partnerships in the region and compete more directly for Korean companies' AI engagements.
