Qualcomm Licenses Huawei's LogicFolding Chip Technology
Qualcomm has signed a multiyear cross-licensing agreement with Huawei, covering 5G, AI, and optical networking technologies. The deal includes patents for Huawei's LogicFolding chip technology, which was developed to enhance chip performance and transistor density without relying on extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment.
The agreement highlights Huawei's LogicFolding technology as a potentially viable alternative for chip design and manufacturing in the absence of advanced lithography tools. This approach focuses on vertically stacking circuits and optimizing data transfers within a chip, rather than shrinking transistor line widths, to improve processing efficiency and transistor density by over 50%. This method addresses the challenges China faces due to U.S. export controls on EUV lithography machines.
For Qualcomm, licensing this technology suggests an acknowledgment of Huawei's independent innovation in chip design. While the financial terms were not fully disclosed, the agreement's value is estimated to exceed $133.9 million, indicating a substantial transaction. This move could provide Qualcomm with access to alternative chip performance enhancement methods, potentially broadening its technological toolkit.
The validation from Qualcomm, a major global chipmaker, lends credibility to Huawei's efforts to develop domestic chip capabilities under restrictions. Huawei is already applying LogicFolding to its Ascend AI chips, and its Kirin 9050 Pro application processor, believed to be 7-nanometer-class, has shown competitive benchmark scores against leading industry chips.
