ASML’s chip equipment sales to China soar 109% despite US export curb push
Dutch semiconductor equipment supplier ASML expects China to account for 20% of its total sales this year. This follows a 109% surge in sales to China in the third quarter compared to the previous three months, increasing China's share of ASML's machine sales from 14% to 23%.
ASML's recent financial results show a substantial increase in its sales to China, nearly doubling in a single quarter. This growth occurred despite ongoing pressure from the United States on the Dutch government to tighten export restrictions on chipmaking machinery, particularly less advanced equipment.
The surge in sales suggests that Chinese customers are actively acquiring chipmaking equipment from ASML. This could indicate efforts to build out domestic chip production capabilities or secure existing supply ahead of potential future restrictions, especially for less advanced machinery not yet fully covered by existing export controls.
The situation places Dutch Prime Prime Minister Rob Jetten under increased scrutiny as Washington advocates for stricter controls. ASML's financial performance highlights the economic incentives for the company to maintain its sales to China, while also navigating international political pressures regarding technology exports.
