Alibaba Introduces New Qwen Glasses With Biometric Payments Arabian Post
Alibaba Group has launched its Qwen AI glasses, the N1 and N1 Pro, in China, with prices starting at 2,899 yuan. The devices integrate the Qwen AI assistant, offering features like 4K video recording, object recognition, and, in the Pro model, eye-tracking and iris-based biometric payments. The retail availability began on Tuesday, following reservations opened on September 22.
Alibaba's new Qwen glasses represent a move to extend its artificial intelligence capabilities into physical hardware. By positioning the N1 and N1 Pro as everyday interfaces, Alibaba aims to enable users to access information, record activities, and complete tasks without consistently relying on a smartphone. This strategy places the company in closer competition with established smart-glasses suppliers while expanding its AI product ecosystem beyond software.
The primary distinction between the N1 and N1 Pro models lies in their biometric and sensing components. While both offer core AI assistant functions and 50-megapixel cameras with 4K video, the Pro model adds eye-tracking for contextual AI responses, iris-based verification for payments, and health monitoring features such as heart rate, blood oxygen, and skin temperature. Alibaba has stated these measurements are presented as wellness features, not independently validated medical diagnostics, indicating their accuracy and suitability for clinical decisions have not been publicly established.
The proactive AI assistance, where the glasses recognize situations and offer help without explicit commands, depends on continuous data collection from cameras, microphones, and other sensors. Features like eye tracking and biometric payments also introduce questions about how sensitive data are protected, where they are processed, and which services can access them. The article notes that detailed independent assessments of the new devices' privacy and security safeguards were not available at launch.
