Apple to Unveil New Smart Home Devices With AI-Upgraded Siri, Taking On Amazon and Google
Apple is expected to introduce new smart home products, including an iPad-like wall-mounted device, featuring an AI-upgraded Siri virtual assistant. These devices aim to help users control smart home functions and compete with established rivals like Amazon and Google, as well as newer AI upstarts, according to analysts.
Apple's reported entry into new smart home hardware with an AI-enhanced Siri reflects a persistent effort to gain traction in a market where it has struggled for a decade. The company's prior Home app and HomePod speakers, launched in 2016 and 2018 respectively, faced challenges from Amazon's Echo and Google Home, particularly regarding third-party device compatibility and Siri's limited utility in providing useful answers.
The integration of an AI-upgraded Siri, with assistance from Google this past summer, is a key component of this renewed push. However, a chief analyst at TECHnalysis Research noted that the process of wiring a smart home is still too difficult for many Apple consumers to see a benefit. The success of these new devices may depend on Apple's ability to simplify this process and its willingness to work across the broader smart home ecosystem, not just within its own products.
This move also comes as Apple's hardware sales are under closer investor scrutiny for growth, with its services revenue facing regulatory pressure. Competing with companies like Amazon, which has invested heavily in its smart home offerings, and AI firms with hardware aspirations, indicates Apple's strategic intent to diversify its growth avenues and strengthen its position in consumer technology.
