Advantech Launches ASR-D501 AI Companion Computer for Autonomous Drone Applications
Advantech has launched the ASR-D501, an AI companion computer for autonomous drone applications. The device, powered by the Qualcomm QCS6490, offers up to 12 TOPS of AI performance within a sub-10W power envelope and integrates multi-camera vision, sensor connectivity, and flight-controller interfaces, according to the company.
The ASR-D501 is designed to process AI workloads directly on the drone, handling tasks such as object detection, visual localization, and sensor fusion locally. This onboard processing aims to reduce the drone's reliance on continuous cloud connectivity, allowing the primary flight controller to concentrate on real-time flight stabilization and actuator control, which could be critical for autonomous operations.
The platform supports sophisticated perception systems through five 4-lane MIPI-CSI interfaces for various cameras and onboard connections for LiDAR, depth cameras, and IMUs. Its wireless capabilities, including Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth, and 4G/5G cellular connectivity, are intended to facilitate flexible communication architectures for telemetry, command, control, and remote mission management in diverse deployments.
Advantech aims to accelerate development by providing Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and its Robotic Suite for Drone. This pre-integrated software environment connects ROS 2 applications with flight-controller ecosystems like PX4 and ArduPilot, offering validated reference workflows for AI perception, sensor fusion, and flight control. The goal is to reduce integration complexity for developers working on autonomous UAV applications.
