GAC Group Evaluates Plans to Add Local Production Capacity in Europe, Plans to Launch 12 New Models in France by 2030
Chinese automaker GAC Group is evaluating options to add local production capacity in Europe, according to reports. Its French subsidiary confirmed exploring expansion, including potential partnerships, a move reportedly driven by European Union tariffs on China-made cars. GAC aims to launch 12 electric and hybrid models in France by 2030.
GAC Group's reported evaluation of local production in Europe reflects a strategic adjustment to mitigate the impact of trade policy. The company's French deputy CEO confirmed exploring ways to expand its European footprint, including potential partnerships with entities like Magna. This shift towards establishing local manufacturing capabilities for the long term directly addresses the EU's tariffs on China-made cars, which act as a key incentive to produce closer to the market.
Beyond manufacturing, GAC plans to significantly expand its product and distribution network in France. The automaker aims to roll out 12 fully electric and hybrid models by 2030 and targets 50 dealership locations by 2026, scaling to 200 by the end of the decade. This dual focus on product variety and market presence indicates an intention to move beyond an initial market entry to become a more established European brand.
While GAC explores new European capacity, its broader production outlook remains robust. Mobility Global forecasts GAC’s overall output to climb from roughly 787,000 vehicles in 2026 to over 900,000 by 2030, even without accounting for any new European capacity. This suggests that the European localization effort is a targeted response to regional trade dynamics, rather than a primary driver of the company's overall growth trajectory.
