Wise Rolls Out Overseas QR Payments, Customisable eSIM Plans
Wise has expanded its app to include overseas QR payments and customisable eSIM plans, with customers in Singapore and Malaysia among the first globally to access both features. The QR payment service covers over 50 destinations, including direct connections to local QR networks and a partnership with Alipay+.
The integration of various national QR payment systems into a single application addresses a common point of friction for international travelers: navigating diverse local payment methods. By enabling direct use of systems like PayNow QR, DuitNow QR, and QR Ph, Wise aims to simplify transactions in multiple markets. The partnership with Ant International’s Alipay+ further extends this reach, notably allowing payments in mainland China without requiring a local bank card or mobile number, which could reduce a significant barrier for visitors.
The addition of customisable eSIM plans complements the payment features by providing a more flexible connectivity option for travelers. The ability to choose data allowance and duration, rather than relying solely on standard regional plans, could offer efficiencies for users with variable data needs. The refund policy for purchased but unused data plans also adds a layer of consumer protection, potentially encouraging adoption by mitigating the risk of over-purchasing.
This combined offering of integrated payments and flexible eSIMs targets the practical challenges of international travel. From a user perspective, managing both connectivity and payments through one platform could streamline logistics, allowing more focus on the travel experience itself. This approach suggests a strategy to enhance the utility of the Wise app beyond its core money transfer services, aiming for a more comprehensive role as a travel companion.
