17 Korean Auto Parts Makers Court Skoda Supply Chain in Czechia

Seventeen South Korean auto parts manufacturers recently engaged with Skoda's procurement team and local suppliers in Czechia, hosted by KOTRA. The meetings in Prague aimed to integrate Korean firms into Europe's automotive supply chain, particularly as Czech electric vehicle production surged 89% to 285,000 units last year, according to a KOTRA report.

The push by South Korean auto parts makers into Czechia reflects a strategic response to the European automotive industry's electrification and ongoing supply chain adjustments. Czechia is the European Union's third-largest car producer, and its existing parts ecosystem includes major players like Skoda, Hyundai Motor, and Toyota. This provides a potentially familiar operating environment for Korean firms, given that approximately 20 Korean tier-one and tier-two suppliers already established a presence alongside Hyundai Motor.

Targeting Skoda, a Volkswagen Group subsidiary that recorded 30.1 billion euros in revenue last year, offers access to an automaker actively expanding its electric vehicle lineup. The reported 89% increase in Czech EV production to 285,000 units last year, making up about 20% of total passenger car output, signals a growing demand for specialized EV components. These factors suggest a calculated move by Korean suppliers to secure new business in a burgeoning EV manufacturing hub.

The one-on-one meetings, which covered 16 product categories identified by Skoda's procurement team, were designed to help Korean companies broaden their customer base beyond existing Korean automakers in the region. KOTRA's stated intent to provide follow-up support aims to translate these initial discussions into supply chain partnerships across the broader European auto industry, extending beyond the Volkswagen Group.
