With iOS 27, I’m actually using Siri again
Apple has launched iOS 27, featuring a significantly enhanced Siri. The new Siri, powered by Google's Gemini models, moves beyond basic tasks to handle complex requests and on-screen context. This update follows multiple delays since Apple Intelligence was first teased over two years ago. Users can now ask Siri to draft messages, summarize conversations, and identify objects through the Camera app, marking a substantial upgrade in its daily utility.
Apple's Siri overhaul with iOS 27, powered by Google's Gemini models, is a significant shift. Apple's reliance on external AI for core features is confirmed, despite its own "Apple Intelligence" branding. The integration with on-screen context and complex requests marks a functional leap from its previous ChatGPT-integrated version.
For Asia's AI developers, this highlights the continued dominance of foundational models from US giants. Companies in markets like South Korea and China, such as Naver and Baidu, must now compete with a more capable, globally distributed Apple product. The challenge is to offer unique, localized value that Google's underlying models may not fully capture.
The thing to watch is how quickly third-party developers in Asia integrate with the new Siri. A smooth handoff between Siri and apps will determine its enterprise utility. If developers fail to adapt, Siri's impact on workflow automation in Asian businesses will remain limited, despite its consumer appeal.
