Waters Launches AI Link, Advancing AI-Enabled LC-MS Workflows from Research to Release
Waters Corporation has launched Waters AI Link, a new software capability that integrates Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP) into its waters_connect software. The company also joined Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard (MHS) research program, aiming to allow AI agents to directly and autonomously operate Waters' analytical instruments, reducing integration times from weeks to hours.
The core of Waters AI Link is its adoption of Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, an open standard designed to connect AI models and agents with software and data through a common interface. This enables scientists to interact with Waters' instruments and connected automation using natural language, leveraging large language models like Claude, including Claude Science, Anthropic's AI workbench for scientific research.
Waters' participation in the Model Hardware Standard research program addresses a significant bottleneck in laboratory automation. Connecting proprietary instruments often requires extensive custom software engineering, a process that can take weeks or months. MHS aims to streamline this, allowing AI agents to operate physical lab devices and recover from errors autonomously, potentially accelerating research cycles around the clock.
This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between AI-driven hypothesis generation and physical lab testing. By connecting AI agents to both data and instruments, Waters aims to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery, particularly in regulated environments. The system is designed to carry audit trails from research through development into quality control, supporting AI-directed experiments from initial concepts to validated release for various molecules.
