VLC crosses 7 billion downloads
The free and offline VLC media player, developed by the non-profit VideoLAN, has surpassed 7 billion downloads across all platforms. This milestone was announced by Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the president and lead developer of VLC, and comes approximately 18 months after the application reached 6 billion downloads in January 2025. VideoLAN recently ported VLC to Amazon’s new Vega OS for TVs and is working on supporting additional platforms and codecs. The company is also developing VLC 4, though its release timeline is extended.
VLC's continued growth to 7 billion downloads, with 1 billion added in 18 months, underscores the enduring demand for free, offline media solutions, even amid the rise of streaming platforms.
