UAE's TII probe set to make historic asteroid landing

The UAE's Technology Innovation Institute (TII) has developed a probe for a 2028 mission to image two planets and seven asteroids, culminating in a landing on 269 Justitia in 2036. The probe, designed and built in Abu Dhabi, will separate from the MBR Explorer spacecraft to autonomously capture close-range images and excavate the asteroid's surface.

    Nexa's Summary

The TII probe represents a specific technical contribution to a deep-space mission. Its design for autonomous operation in extreme conditions and its role as the mission's sole deployable payload highlight a focused engineering effort. The mission's extended timeline, with the probe deploying eight years after launch, underscores the long-term planning and reliability required for such endeavors.

The mission's objective to land on 269 Justitia and excavate its surface aims to provide new data on the asteroid's composition and physical characteristics. This direct surface interaction, following continuous imaging during descent, offers a distinct advantage over orbital observations, allowing for the study of subsurface materials. This approach is designed to yield insights that remote sensing alone cannot provide.

The collaboration between TII, the UAE Space Agency, and academic institutions in the UAE for the probe's development indicates a coordinated national effort in space technology. While the MBR Explorer spacecraft will launch from Japan, the development of the probe in Abu Dhabi demonstrates a specific capacity in the UAE to contribute to complex space missions, focusing on the deployable payload aspect rather than the entire spacecraft system.
