Truecaller takes its scam intelligence to the open web as it looks beyond caller ID
Truecaller launched Scam Checker, a web and Android service that identifies fraudulent phone numbers, links, and messages. The free tool uses community reports from ScamFeed and is initially available in India, with plans to expand to Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Truecaller evaluated 12.9 billion messages globally between September 14 and 20, flagging 20.3 million as fraudulent. The company extends its scam intelligence beyond its traditional caller ID app, which serves over 500 million users.
Truecaller's Scam Checker reflects a critical shift beyond caller ID. The company faces pressure in India, its largest market with over 350 million users, from government-backed Calling Name Presentation and features from Apple and Google. Truecaller must adapt as scams evolve beyond voice calls, with 46% of scammed Indian adults reporting contact via messaging apps in a 2025 GSMA survey.
This expansion into a multi-channel scam detection service benefits Indian consumers directly. Truecaller estimates 14 million monthly web searches for suspicious links and numbers. Scam Checker addresses this need by providing a rapid verification tool. The company's reliance on its community, with 20,000 live scam reports in India and 1,300 new ones weekly, strengthens its data advantage against local fraud.
The thing to watch is Truecaller's rollout in Southeast Asia. This region presents a fragmented regulatory environment and diverse scam tactics. Success there would validate its crowdsourced model beyond India, proving its global scalability for enterprise fraud and risk products.
