Sikkim participates in first Regional India AI workshop in Kolkata
Sikkim participated in the first Regional India AI Workshop-cum-Review in Kolkata, India. The event, organized by West Bengal's IT Department and India AI, gathered representatives from Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim, and West Bengal. Discussions focused on state cooperation for responsible AI adoption, talent development, and data sharing. West Bengal IT Minister Dr. Kalyan Chakraborti emphasized strengthening state-level partnerships for safe AI deployment across key sectors.
The regional AI workshop in Kolkata reflects India's push for localized AI development. Five states, including Sikkim, participated. This approach recognizes that diverse regional needs require tailored AI solutions. West Bengal's call for greater inter-state cooperation reflects a practical understanding of resource sharing.
India AI's seven pillars, presented by Director Md. Y. Safirulla K., aim to integrate states into the national AI strategy. Sikkim's Principal Director, T. Samdup, confirmed the state's interest in data sharing and collaborative digital interventions. This focus on specific state requirements could accelerate public service delivery improvements across the country.
The test for India AI will be translating these workshop discussions into concrete, shared datasets and deployable solutions by 2027. Without tangible cross-state projects and measurable outcomes, these regional meetings risk becoming merely symbolic. The participation of institutions like IIT Kharagpur and TCS Research suggests technical capacity is available.
