Sea Employees Reportedly Told to Switch Salary Accounts to MariBank
Sea employees in Singapore must now use MariBank for salary crediting starting in October. MariBank is the digital bank owned by Sea. This mandate was communicated to staff earlier in September. Employees can request exceptions through human resources for personal circumstances. Sea is offering a S$100 Shopee voucher to those who updated their details by September 17.
Sea's move to mandate MariBank for employee salaries reflects a direct play to boost its digital bank's user base and transaction volume. This strategy immediately adds a captive pool of users to MariBank. The S$100 Shopee voucher and preferential loan offers are clear incentives to smooth the transition for staff.
This aggressive approach puts pressure on other Singaporean digital banks like GXS, a Grab and Singtel joint venture. GXS does not impose similar salary requirements on its staff. Sea's tactic could force competitors to reconsider their own internal policies to drive adoption, or risk falling behind in user acquisition metrics.
The thing to watch is the Ministry of Manpower's response. While employers can engage employees on payment options, a mandatory switch could test the boundaries of employee engagement. Any regulatory pushback would force Sea to adjust its policy and could set a precedent for other fintechs in Singapore.
