Samsung to Install Herman Miller Chairs Across Chip Division
Samsung Electronics will install Herman Miller New Aeron Light Plus chairs across all sites of its Device Solutions (DS) division. Each chair costs nearly 2 million won, or about $1,400. The rollout will complete by the second half of next year. Samsung follows SK hynix, which adopted Herman Miller chairs for all employees in 2022, intensifying competition for talent in the chip sector.
Samsung’s 2 million won chair rollout is not about ergonomics. It reflects a widening benefits competition among Korean chipmakers. SK hynix began offering Herman Miller chairs to all employees four years ago. Samsung’s decision confirms that the battle for talent now extends beyond performance bonuses to daily work conditions.
This shift impacts Korean chipmakers directly. Employees value daily work environment improvements over one-off perks. Samsung’s DS division, with its large numbers of chip design and R&D staff, aims to boost job satisfaction and reduce fatigue. This could put pressure on other regional tech firms to upgrade their own workplace amenities.
The test for Samsung is whether this investment translates into tangible talent retention gains. Other major Asian chip players, like TSMC, have not publicly engaged in this specific type of benefits competition. It is worth watching whether this trend spreads beyond Korea’s highly competitive chip market.
