Roblox Taps Malaysian To Lead Southeast Asia And Oceania As Child-Safety Questions Mount
Roblox has appointed Joel Neoh, founder of the payments app Fave, as its first Managing Director for Southeast Asia and Oceania. Neoh will oversee regional strategy and work on building parental trust. His appointment occurs as Roblox faces approximately 180 lawsuits in the United States alleging child safety failures, which the company denies, and a police inquiry in Malaysia regarding an alleged child injury case.
Joel Neoh's appointment as Roblox's Managing Director for Southeast Asia and Oceania places an entrepreneur with a history of scaling consumer-facing platforms in a key regional leadership role. His mandate includes developing regional strategy and cultivating trust with parents, a significant aspect given the platform's current challenges.
These challenges include about 180 lawsuits in the United States accusing Roblox of failing to protect children from sexual predators, which the company denies. Additionally, police in Malaysia are investigating a possible link between the platform and a Batu Pahat case where a nine-year-old allegedly injured his six-year-old brother.
Neoh's background, particularly founding Fave, a fintech and payments platform that served over 10 million users, required building substantial user trust for financial transactions. This experience in developing and maintaining broad consumer confidence on commercial platforms could inform Roblox's strategy for addressing parental concerns and communicating safety measures, especially as he focuses on local engagement and supporting regional creators.
